Kalamandalam Syla

Born on January 9, 1985, in Kondotty, Malappuram, Kalamandalam Syla embarked on her journey into the world of classical dance at the tender age of six. Under the tutelage of Sri. Nilambur Mohan Master, she began her training in Bharatanatyam, quickly distinguishing herself by winning numerous awards in dance competitions during her early schooling years. Her passion for dance led her to the prestigious Kerala Kalamandalam, where she specialized in Mohiniyattam and completed both her 10th grade and Higher Secondary education. She honed her skills under the mentorship of renowned gurus such as Kalamandalam Leelamma, Haimavathi, Pushpalatha, and Lathika.

Continuing her academic pursuits, Syla earned a first-class degree in Bharatanatyam from the Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya in Chhattisgarh. During her studies, she received special training from celebrated masters like Vasundhara Doraiswamy and Kalamandalam Latha. Her educational journey culminated in a first-class post-graduate degree from Kalai Kaviri College of Fine Arts, Trichy, under the guidance of esteemed teachers, including Kalakshetra Yogeshwari.

Throughout her undergraduate and postgraduate years, Syla was a lead dancer in numerous dance ensembles. She has graced over 200 stages across Kerala and beyond, performing in various classical dance forms like Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, and Kathak, as well as Tamil folk arts like Mayilattam, Kolattam, and Oyilattam. Syla’s performances include celebrated dance dramas such as Kanyabhoomi, Kannaki, and Chumanna Manninte Paattu.

After completing her academic training in Bharatanatyam, Syla served as a dance instructor at Kendriya Vidyalaya for seven years. In 2009, she founded the Nadanam School of Arts in Kozhikode, where she has trained hundreds of students in Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam, guiding many through their Arangetram. In addition to her teaching, she has served as a judge for district and state-level youth festivals in various dance categories.

In recognition of her contributions, Syla was awarded the Kerala Government’s prestigious Vajra Jubilee Fellowship in 2018. In 2023, she choreographed and performed the lead role of Husnul Jamal in the Bharatanatyam adaptation of Moyinkutty Vaidyar’s immortal poem Husnul Jamal Badarul Muneer. For her distinguished work in classical dance, she received the 2023 Folk Arts Cultural Forum Award. Syla continues to perform on various stages, both within and outside the state, and actively participates in classical dance workshops, leaving an indelible mark on the world of classical dance.
